Iryna Pavlova's Teaching Portfolio

A Teacher at Heart

Welcome to my teaching portfolio. On this website you will find information about my educational and professional background. You will learn about my teaching philosophy, approaches to teaching and learning, professional activities, and my future goals. This portfolio is a little window into my personality and the values I hold as a professional teacher.

My interest in teaching goes back to my school years when I excelled in English and developed my passion for modern languages. I decided that I wanted to be a teacher at a very young age, and I have never regretted this decision. It is one of the most rewarding careers one can imagine. Having completed my Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature in my native country Ukraine, I started teaching English at the International House Language School in my home town of Lviv. I successfully taught there for three years until I immigrated to Canada in 2001. For the past 15 years of my career in Canada, I have worked in a variety of teaching and counselling positions in the field of Second Language Education. I have taught students of various ages, language levels, and cultural backgrounds. My teaching experience ranges from general ESL/LINC classes to content-based ESL classes, TOEFL and IELTS preparation classes, conversation, writing, and business communication and employment preparation classes.  I am skilled at curriculum development, learning materials and course design, as well as student assessment. I also have experience working as a TESL Instructor and as a Teaching Practicum Supervisor in a TESL Diploma Program, where I taught Linguistic Systems and TESL Methodology courses.

My passion for languages and teaching goes far beyond just one language as I am a fluent speaker of Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish languages. Since my arrival in Canada, I have earned a Master of Arts degree in Russian and have taught first year Russian course several times during my studies at the University of Waterloo. I have earned a Certificate in University Teaching, which prepared me for an academic teaching career. In addition, I hold a Master of Education Degree at OISE, University of Toronto. My Master studies at the University of Waterloo and at OISE have refined my communication, research, and academic writing skills to a high standard. Graduate studies in Education have broadened my understanding of multicultural and bilingual education as well as current issues in the field of Second Language Acquisition.

Over the years of my teaching career, I have learned to be reflective about my teaching and learn from my successes and my mistakes. I see my role as a gardener, who cultivates the students' minds by nourishing, enhancing the climate, removing the weeds, and then standing back and allowing growth to occur.
